You are halfway through a migration when a thought arrives: "I need to reply to that PR." It feels impossible to forget. Ten minutes later, it is gone.
Or the reverse happens. The task will not leave. It sits at the edge of your attention and pulls you away from the code in front of you.
This guide is about one narrow skill that can help with both: moving tasks out of your head and into a place you will see them, with as little friction as possible. It is for developers with or without a diagnosis.
This article is not medical advice. Focus Pad is a productivity tool, not a treatment. For diagnosis or treatment of ADHD, talk to a qualified health professional.
In short
- Writing tasks down (cognitive offloading) is a well-studied way to reduce memory load.
- A calendar and task-list habit is part of a CBT program for adults with ADHD that a clinical trial tested. That trial tested therapy, not an app.
- The best capture tool has the shortest path from thought to list, and keeps the list in view.
- Focus Pad gives you one global shortcut, an always-on-top list and reminders you tune per task.
What research says about writing things down
The U.S. National Institute of Mental Health lists difficulty "keeping on task, or staying organized" among the signs of inattention in ADHD (NIMH).
External systems often show up in structured support. One randomized controlled trial enrolled 86 adults with ADHD who already took medication. A cognitive behavioral therapy program led to lower symptom scores than relaxation training with education (Safren et al., 2010). Its first module trained people to organize and plan with a calendar and a task-list system.
Two cautions matter here:
- The trial tested a full therapy program with a clinician, not an app.
- A to-do tool cannot replace that kind of support.
What the research does show is this: a reliable task-list habit is part of approaches that clinicians study and use.
Broader research points the same way. Using external tools to reduce memory load is called cognitive offloading (Risko & Gilbert, 2016). In experiments with 1,196 people, external reminders improved performance on a task that required people to remember intentions for later (Gilbert, 2015).
Why most task apps get abandoned
Every developer has a task app they stopped using. The reasons tend to repeat:
| Friction | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Many steps to add a task | The thought fades before you reach the input field |
| The list is in another window or tab | Out of sight, out of mind |
| Too many features | Setup and planning replace doing |
| Reminders you cannot tune | You mute them all, then miss the important one |
| A long list with no signal | Everything looks equally urgent |
A smarter planner will not fix this. A shorter path from thought to list will, along with a list that stays where you can see it.
How Focus Pad keeps capture low-friction
Focus Pad in DevWorkspace Pro is a Markdown checklist in a small window that floats above your other windows. It holds the tasks you work on now. Long-term plans live elsewhere.

One shortcut from any app
Press ⌃⌥⌘T on macOS, or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T on Windows and Linux. Focus Pad opens over whatever you were doing. Type the task, press the shortcut again, and you are back where you were.
A list that stays in view
The window stays on top. Park it in a corner of the screen, and your current list is visible without a click.
Clear signals for urgency
| Signal | What you see |
|---|---|
| Priority 5 | A red mark at the left of the task, and a count in the top right corner |
| Priority 4 | An amber mark |
| Deadline | A label that turns amber within 24 hours and red when overdue |
| Colors | Up to eight colors, with your own names, for example "Quick win" or "Needs focus" |
Click a color to dim every other task. A long list becomes a short one for the next hour.
Reminders you control
Pesky sends a desktop notification about one task at an interval you choose, from 1 minute to 24 hours. It keeps going until you complete the task or call it off. You pick which tasks get Pesky, so the important ones get through and the rest stay quiet.
- A new Pesky notification replaces the last one, so old ones do not pile up.
- Pesky respects Do Not Disturb and Focus modes.
- After a locked screen or sleep, you get one notification per task, not one per missed interval.
More detail: Pesky reminders: nagging you control.
Completing a task takes intent
A normal click selects a task. ⌘-click (Ctrl-click) completes it and removes it from the list, so a stray click never costs you a task. Like a small reward? Turn on Confetti on Check-Off in Preferences.
Capture away from your desk
Link the DevWorkspace Pro Telegram bot. Send it a message from your phone, and that message becomes a task in Focus Pad.
Small habits that help
These are general habits, not clinical advice:
- Capture first, sort later. Skip the priority while you capture. Type it and get back to work.
- Write the next physical step. "Open
routes/api.phpand add the endpoint" is easier to start than "API work". - Keep one collection per project. Press ⌘K in Focus Pad to switch. See Per-project to-do lists.
- Let agents write to the list. With the Focus Pad MCP server, an AI agent can add its open items for you.
- Pick one Pesky task. If everything nags, nothing does.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Focus Pad a treatment for ADHD?
No. Focus Pad is a checklist tool. It is not a medical device or a treatment. For diagnosis and treatment, talk to a qualified health professional.
Why does capture speed matter?
A thought that you must hold while you open an app and find the correct list can be lost on the way. A global shortcut that opens the list from any app removes most of those steps.
Can reminders be less annoying?
Yes. With Pesky you choose the interval for each task, from 1 minute to 24 hours. A new notification replaces the old one, and Pesky respects Do Not Disturb and Focus modes.
Can I add tasks when I am away from my computer?
Yes. Link your account to the DevWorkspace Pro Telegram bot. Each message becomes a task in Focus Pad. If the app is not running, the task shows the next time you start it.
