How it works

  1. Pick the stack of your project. Each template has the usual build, test and lint commands for that stack, code conventions and safety rules.
  2. Choose CLAUDE.md for Claude Code or AGENTS.md for Codex, OpenCode, Cursor and other agents that read it. The content is the same, only the file name and the first lines change.
  3. Copy or download the file, save it in the root of your project, and replace each line in angle brackets with your own details.
  4. Keep it short. Remove the commands you do not use and add the rules your agent keeps getting wrong.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md?

Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md. AGENTS.md is an open format that Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and other agents read. The instructions inside can be the same.

Can one file work for every agent?

Yes. Keep the rules in AGENTS.md and add a CLAUDE.md that contains the line @AGENTS.md. Claude Code then imports the same rules.

Where do I save the file?

In the root folder of the project, and commit it so your team and CI agents use the same rules. Personal rules for all your projects go in your home folder, for example ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md for Claude Code.

How long should it be?

Short. The agent loads the file into every session, so each line costs context. Keep commands, conventions and hard rules. Leave out things the agent can read from the code.

Are the commands right for my project?

They are common defaults for each stack. Check them against your composer.json, package.json, Makefile or CI workflow, and change them to match.
