DevWorkspace Pro

Which local development tool should you use?

Answer six questions. You get a pick with the reason, and a link to the full comparison.

What do you build?
Which operating system?
Containers or native?
Do you work alone or in a team?
Do you run AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode) across many projects?
Budget?

How it works

  1. Each answer narrows the list. The rules use only facts from our comparison pages: operating system support, runtimes, stacks and price.
  2. The first rule that matches your answers gives the pick. Often the best answer is two tools: one that runs your sites and one that manages your projects.
  3. We make DevWorkspace Pro, so we tried hard to be fair. When a free tool fits better, the picker says so.
  4. Your answers stay in the page URL, so you can share the result.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this picker biased toward DevWorkspace Pro?

We make DevWorkspace Pro, so read the reasons and check the comparison page. The rules pick a free tool whenever your answers fit one, and they add DevWorkspace Pro only when you want AI agent workflows or work in a team, and a paid tool is fine.

Why does it sometimes suggest two tools?

Many of these tools work at different layers. DDEV, Herd or Docker Desktop run your sites. DevWorkspace Pro manages the projects on top of them. Using both is common.

Which tools run on Linux?

From this list: DDEV, Lando, Local, XAMPP, Docker Desktop and DevWorkspace Pro. Laravel Herd, MAMP and ServBay run on macOS and Windows. Laragon runs on Windows.

Which ones are free?

DDEV, Lando and XAMPP are free and open source. Local is free. Herd, MAMP and ServBay have free plans. Laragon is free for non-commercial use. Docker Desktop is free for personal use and small companies. DevWorkspace Pro is paid.
