Rails developers already have strong opinions about their toolchain, and DevWorkspace Pro does not try to change them. Drop your app folder on the window and it sits next to your other projects with an editor, Git, GitHub issues and Actions, AI agents that resume, and terminal tabs that keep their output.

There is no Ruby-specific detection. What you get is the full set of core features, plus the Docker Compose Services card when your app has a compose.yaml.

Core features every project gets

  • Files editor, ⌘+P and project search
  • Git Changes and History, GitHub issues and Actions
  • Send to AI and AI sessions with resume
  • Terminal tabs with 60-day history
  • Notes, Focus Pad and the ⌘+K switcher
  • Uptime monitoring and Remote SSH

Extras for Ruby and Rails

  • Makefile targets show as buttons on the Run card.
  • A package.json with a lockfile gets its scripts on the Run card and the npm security scan.
  • Docker Compose services when the folder has compose.yaml. Otherwise, you run your own Ruby toolchain in the terminal tab.

Your first day

Add the app

Drag the app folder onto the window, or click Import and choose it. To start from a repository, use New Project › Clone a repository with the Other run method and type the command you use, for example bin/dev.

For a brand new app, run rails new in your usual terminal, then drop the folder on the window.

Run the server, console and tests

Open the Terminal tab and run bin/dev or bin/rails server. Click + to open a second terminal for bin/rails console and a third for the test suite.

Each terminal keeps its output when you move to another tab or project. After a restart, it shows the saved output and starts a new shell in the last folder you used.

Hand a task to an AI agent

Press ⌘+J and type the task, for example "Add a has_many :comments association with a migration and a model spec". Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode starts in the app folder. If you quit the app, the status bar offers the session on the next launch, with the same conversation.

Ship through GitHub

Read each diff in Git › Changes and commit. Overcommit, Lefthook or any pre-commit hook runs the same way it does in a terminal. Push from the terminal tab.

In Git › Actions, follow your RSpec or Minitest job. If it fails, click Send failure to AI. The prompt includes the workflow, the commit, the failed step and the end of its log.

Features Ruby teams use most

GitHub issues in the app. Search and filter the repository's issues, then comment, close or reopen them. Send to AI passes the issue and all its comments to your agent, and Send to Focus Pad adds it to your task list.

Docker Compose. If PostgreSQL, Redis or Sidekiq run in compose.yaml, the Services card lists each service with its status and published ports. Hover a row to start, stop, restart or stream its logs.

Go to file and search. ⌘+P finds order.rb when you type ordrb, because the letters do not need to be next to each other. ⌘+Shift+F searches the project with match case, whole word and regular expressions, and skips files in .gitignore.

Notes. The Scratchpad tab is a per-project notes pad with syntax highlighting. It is a good home for console snippets, SQL and deploy steps.

Remote SSH. Open a shell on your Linux server from the Remote SSH tab, using a host from your SSH config.

Uptime. Add the app's public URL in Health › Uptime. Our servers check it at your interval and email you when it goes down.

Your Ruby setup stays as it is

The app does not install or change Ruby, Bundler or your version manager. The Terminal tab opens your own interactive shell with your shell configuration, so rbenv, chruby, asdf and mise behave exactly as they do elsewhere.

Keep RubyMine, VS Code or Vim. Click IDE to open the app with your editor command.

Does your Rails app have a React frontend or a PHP service next to it? See /for/react-vite and /for/php. Docs: Projects, Terminal, Git Changes, Docker Compose.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What support does a Ruby or Rails project get?

It gets the core features that work for any folder: the Files editor, Cmd+P, project search, Git Changes and History, GitHub issues and Actions, Send to AI, AI sessions with resume, terminal tabs, notes, Focus Pad, the project switcher, uptime monitoring and Remote SSH.

How do I run bin/dev or rails server?

Open the Terminal tab of the project and run it there. Add a terminal tab for each long-running process, for example the server, a job worker and the test runner. A Makefile in the project shows its targets as buttons on the Run card.

Can I use Docker Compose with a Rails app?

Yes. A project that does not use DDEV and has a compose.yaml gets the Services card. Start, stop, restart and stream logs for PostgreSQL, Redis or any other service.
